Mohr Capital, a privately owned commercial real estate investment firm, came to Marketwave in need of monument signs to go in front of every property they own. These would be permanent, free-standing installations across a variety of properties. We were free to explore materials and sizes, though they suggested initially that they were thinking of using concrete. I did research on the most popular and effective materials used in outdoor signs and found that all-concrete signs are mostly “utilitarian”, used for no-frills designs and usually at entrances to cities and parks. I found that it is more cost-effective, visually appealing and easier to work with foam core, aluminum, or plastics. Since this company is in real estate and specifically mentioned it, I decided it would make sense to incorporate concrete into the base of the sign while keeping the other part, which I referred to as the “insert”, an industry-standard Sintra Board (expanded PVC).

We wanted the sign the be relatively eye-level, with the slight offset of the blue “insert” in the concrete base being a subtle but significant detail that makes the sign more unique, intriguing and visually appealing. This approach combines modern with traditional outdoor signage. Not only that, but this build conveys that Mohr Capital is strong and sophisticated – attributes that echo their brand characteristics.
