One of our bigger clients at Motivating Graphics was Bose. One thing we tried pitching to them was stepping up their packaging to reflect the luxury item inside.
Upon taking a walk through Best Buy you’ll notice that their packaging is dinky compared to many competitors, something we could help them with. An example can be seen here to the left. They used a simple rigid half-box to form a tray to hold the headphone case, a paper insert on top of the headphone case for protection, and a foldover paper insert with product details. This was wrapped in a coated 20pt paper sleeve. The whole thing was displayed in stores using a simple plastic hangtag attached to the rigid box.
I was tasked with coming up with a packaging concept, building the die lines, making physical samples, and mocking up box designs. I knew I wanted it to be a kiss-cut rigid box, like the kind you see with Apple products – these kinds of boxes with a sleek wrap always add implied value. I wanted the unboxing experience to be elevated even further by opening vertically (left and right) rather than horizontally (top and bottom). The left side of the box would have the cuff, tray and accessory compartment glued to the inside, with the accessory compartment being hidden in its own black paper compartment. One of the goals behind this build was that the customer would be able to reuse the packaging, whether traveling or just preserving.

All-white physical samples I assembled after building out the die lines:
